Tetris Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Each time a major honors show approaches, there’s always a clamor to include of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of fans who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent above others. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored that year
  • Just some logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
