Puzzling Rosy Sludge on Isolated Tasmanian Coast Raises Fears of Likely Phytoplankton Proliferation
Authorities in Tasmania are working to identify a pink slime that has materialized on a remote shoreline, with some scientists concerned it could be an algae outbreak.
Widespread Occurrence Along Shore
The rosy-colored ooze appeared along a stretch of a coastal area about 60km south of the capital. A like substance has also been recorded on parts of a nearby shore and an additional coastal site.
Samples Gathered for Examination
Specimens have been collected and submitted to the regulatory body for examination. A representative stated that "phytoplankton proliferations are a normal phenomenon in response to shifts in food sources, temperature, rain or sunlight".
"They are at times called red or pink tides because the outbreaks can change the water reddish," the official added. "Not all algal blooms are harmful, with many species functioning as a primary source of food for marine life in the oceanic food chain."
"The primary reason of reddish water in Tasmanian waters is the sea plant Noctiluca scintillans, which can create glowing light shows at night."
Rising Rate Linked to Environmental Shifts
Phytoplankton proliferations occur naturally but their frequency has risen in recent years, in part due to climate change and environmental waste that merge to create mineral-filled seas geared for the fast proliferation of dinoflagellates.
Dinoflagellates are a type of algae that normally act as the ocean's detritus consumers. During a outbreak, there is a quick expansion in their populations that disturbs the normal functioning of ecosystems.
These occurrences have been equated with marine infernos and can continue to grow as long as the environment is suitable. In severe cases, vulnerable aquatic environments can be devastated as sea creatures is eliminated or suffocated, offering more nutrients for the bloom.
Previous Devastating Bloom in a neighboring state
A southern state recently dealt with a devastating algal bloom along its coastal region after a succession of oceanic warm spells, which spread across thousands of square kilometres. The bloom caused surfers with irritated eyes and hacking coughs and may have caused the death of up to 250,000 marine animals across hundreds of species, according to agency assessments.
Specialist Opinion on the Current Situation
A marine expert, who helped investigate the start of South Australia's event commented, based on pictures of the current situation, the likely culprit involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a form of dinoflagellate also known as "sea sparkle".
"There have been numerous of these events around Tasmania of late," she said.
The scientist explained the algae did not generate toxins like the organism involved in that devastating outbreak, but it does ingest tiny creatures and "many fish eggs", meaning fish and crustacean species were in greatest danger.
"Typically one notices a outbreak of sea sparkle after a bloom of another organism, or something like a salmon or coral spawning event," she added.
Calls for Response and Safety Concerns
A marine scientist, who gathered specimens of the pink sludge in the state, commented it appeared the potential proliferation had "expanded greatly" and indicated the aquaculture sector was the most likely culprit, referring to similar cases overseas.
"So the state needs to send a firm alert here, the government and the EPA need to act to this. We need to analyse the samples we've gathered and we need to inform the public here," she said.
Henley expressed she had anxieties for people's well-being after feeling a numbness along her arms and face while being splashed with tainted seawater.
Claims of Dead Marine Life and Appeals for Leadership Response
An environmental foundation has stated dead octopus and deceased marine life appearing on the coast, with a prominent conservationist calling the situation as an "environmental emergency" and urging the state premier to visit and "take control the response that authorities must be undertaking".
"He needs to understand this is a disaster in the happening, commercially as well as for nature."

Addressing journalists, the leader stated he was uninformed of any connections between the event and the aquaculture sector, stating scientific testing was required before conclusions could be made.
"We must make certain our aquatic environments are ecologically sound and long-lasting," he added.
"Our coastal assets across the state are our treasures and we need to make sure the community and our business sector can operate side-by-side to enjoy our waterways effectively and sustainably."
