Just as Storm Claudia tore through the north-west the previous evening, City swept United aside at the Etihad. It was a statement three-nil triumph for their manager's side due to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a performance that clearly signaled their leadership claims as they strengthened their position at the top of the table.

Back-to-Back Defeats for United

This outcome represented back-to-back league defeats for Marc Skinner’s side for the first time since May 2024, putting them seven points off the league leaders with their championship aspirations in serious doubt.

Manchester United's ability to juggle domestic and continental football with a limited squad has been a widely debated subject since they earned a place in the European competition. Considering the calendar, it always seemed this was the period that would truly test this capability. Regrettably for the opposition, they appeared tired throughout, the historic win against PSG clearly having had an impact.

Team Changes

The United manager had tried to make changes with a a few alterations. Toone, Terland, Janssen and Galton all provided freshness, although the dropping of the high-performing Melvine Malard to the sidelines was questioned.

Manchester City, in comparison, have fewer fitness concerns. Andrée Jeglertz made a single alteration from the previous win over Everton with Hemp making her initial starting appearance since recovering from a fitness issue.
